Relax and enjoy a rich, delicious cup of home made Mint Hot Chocolate! It’s so easy to make using just a few simple ingredients. You’ll never use store-bought powdered cocoa mix again after having this!
In the dead of winter, there is nothing I love more than a creamy, delicious cup of hot chocolate. I especially love when it has a flavor like mint as well. For years I had bought the plain, old powdered mix from the grocery store. And then a few years ago, I learned how to make the real deal and discovered how completely amazing home made hot chocolate can be. From that point on, I’ve never gone back to that powdered mix.
Making home made hot chocolate is a pretty simple process, using some basic ingredients that you likely already have in your pantry and refrigerator. It only takes about 10 minutes from start to finish and in the end you have a completely comforting, rich, delicious cup of hot chocolate!
I enjoy using whole milk in this recipe, which gives it a wonderfully rich, creamy consistency. You can use a lower fat milk if you prefer, but if you can, indulge a little with the whole milk as it makes such a big difference. For the chocolate, I typically use a semi-sweet or dark, however, feel free to use milk chocolate if you prefer.
When creating this indulgent cup of hot chocolate, I enjoy topping with it with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and if I have it on hand, a little sprig of mint. The mint not only gives it a wonderful, yet subtle flavor, but it also smells amazing!

Ingredients
- 3 c. whole milk
- 2/3 c. semi sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 c. sugar
- pinch/grind of salt
- 1/2 tsp. mint extract
- Toppings:
- whipped cream / whipped topping
- chocolate shavings
- mint sprigs
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, add the milk, chocolate chips, sugar and salt. Heat on meidum low heat, whisking frequently. Continue whisking until the chocolate melts completely and the mixture comes to a low simmer. (Do NOT let boil, as it will burn to the bottom of the pan.) Once the liquid comes to a low simmer, promptly remove from heat. Add the mint extract and stir to combine.
- Ladle the hot chocolate into 3 mugs. Top with whipped cream and any additional toppings you prefer. Enjoy hot.
You can easily make this an adult beverage by adding a shot of peppermint schnapps to your mug of hot chocolate. This is a great way to end a long day, and an even better way to warm up on a cold evening!
If you enjoy almond flavor, you would LOVE my Amaretto Hot Chocolate. I top this drink off with whipped cream and slivered almonds, which makes it a dessert just as much as a drink. I also have a Toasted Coconut Hot Chocolate recipe, which is amazing! If you like coconut or Almond Joy candy bars, then you MUST try this hot chocolate recipe.
After a long day, I hope you get the chance to enjoy this Mint Hot Chocolate. It’s such a wonderful drink, especially during the winter, as is especially wonderful when you get to enjoy it snuggled up with the ones you love. Enjoy! ~Erin
