An amazing Red, White and Blue dessert, perfect for celebrating America! Chewy, delicious sugar cookie dough made with M&M’s® Red, White, & Blue Milk Chocolate candies, stars and stripes sprinkles, and topped with buttercream frosting, makes for the ultimate patriotic treat! Fantastic for Memorial Day and 4th of July picnics and celebrations!
Every year around Memorial Day, I begin preparations for hosting our annual neighborhood picnic. We get together with family and friends, enjoy great picnic food, play games and enjoy the wonderful summer weather. It’s a nice way to enjoy a holiday and three-day weekend.
Recently, my son began asking me what Memorial day was about. I began explaining to him that it was a day that we honor those who died serving our country. This also started a conversation about veterans – who they are, how they served and how even my grandfather was a WWII veteran.
This is my grandfather, Arnold Indahl, who served in World War II.
Because we live in the Washington DC area, we have a unique opportunity to meet and honor those veterans who get the chance to take and “Honor Flight” in to DC. This is a special charity that pays for veterans and their loved ones to visit the war memorials in our nations capital that was built to honor them and their service.
The reason we heard about Honor Flight is because my son’s school has a Fife and Drum Corp, where they perform classic American drum and fife music, and honor our American heritage. The Corp was invited to perform for the veterans taking an Honor Flight from Colorado to Washington, D.C. We live a few miles from Dulles International – on our way to the airport I was explaining to Harrison and his friend that the men and women they would be playing for are very special people. They are veterans who had served in WWII and Korea, just like my grandfather, decades ago. These people that they would be playing for are real-life super heroes! Harrison and his friend both felt very proud to be playing for such a fine group of people!
When we arrived at Dulles, my son’s Fife and Drum Corp performed for these heroic men and women as they came through the airport. It was an amazing and moving sight! People stopped their busy travel schedule to take a moment to shake hands, and tell them “Thank you for serving!” I will say that this was an amazing experience, and I’m so grateful to have had the chance to give these special veterans my gratitude. I was also grateful to have had my son and his drum corp have the opportunity to honor these fine individuals with their music, but to also help them feel as special and honored as possible.
Sadly, Honor Flights for these WWII and Korean veterans are becoming fewer and less frequent. There are only a few flights a month, whereas a few years ago, there were upwards of 15-20 flights each month. There are fewer and fewer of our WWII and Korean veterans to take these flights, however, these special veterans, our Greatest Generation, and their profound service are most certainly not forgotten.
If you don’t get the opportunity to recognize our vets on an Honor Flight, there are some other ways to support our troops. Right now, MARS/Wrigley is showing appreciation of our troops by donating M&M’s® to the troops for every bag purchased at Walmart. Walmart now has M&M’s® Red, White, & Blue Milk Chocolate, M&M’s® Red, White, & Blue Peanut, and Skittles® Red, White, & Blue in stock – be sure to look for the pallet or end cap display. This campaign is ONLY happening at Walmart! Make sure to stop by your local Walmart, pick up some fantastic Red, White and Blue candies, and check out the local “1 For You, 1 For the Troops” campaign happening at a Walmart near you.
I picked up all three of these for our Memorial Day picnic, AND to make this amazing All American Sugar Cookie Pie! Here’s how this amazing red, white and blue dessert comes together.
First, you’ll start by making the sugar cookie dough. This dough is super simple, and comes together easily. Don’t forget to add your M&M’s® Red, White, & Blue Milk Chocolate candies. (I also use this dough recipe in my Funfetti Frosted Sugar Cookie Bars, and my Stars and Stripes Sugar Cookie Bars.) You’ll then press the dough into a 10″ tart pan that has been sprayed with non-stick baking spray. Bake for 26-30 minutes.
Once the big cookie comes out of the oven, be sure to let it cool completely. I decorated my cookie with buttercream frosting around the edges and in the center. To add even more patriotic flare, I added more M&M’s® Red, White, & Blue Milk Chocolate candies. This adds fantastic color, and the chocolate is a great complimentary flavor to the cookie. I also added a few more stars and stripes sprinkles for a fun decoration.
When you slice this pie, you’ll discover the delicious M&M’s® hidden inside. The red, white and blue colors come together wonderfully to create a fantastic dessert for your Memorial Day or July 4th celebration!
Serve slices of the All American Cookie pie with additional M&M’s®. It’s also fantastic served with a big scoop of ice cream on top!
