Looking for a quick and simple way to make a fun milkshake at home? Making homemade milkshakes is a simple process that comes together with just a few simple ingredients.
Milkshakes are a fantastic dessert to quickly make at home. They are great for hot summer days and feel like a special treat, especially when sprinkles are included.
In this post I’ll show you how to make a homemade milkshake, the ingredients and tools you’ll need, and ways to make your milkshake the way you like it.
What do I need to make a vanilla milkshake with sprinkles?
Here’s a quick reference check list of the ingredients you’ll need to make a milkshake at home:
- Vanilla ice cream – feel free to choose either French vanilla, vanilla bean or a slow churn vanilla ice cream. Some stores also carry birthday cake ice cream, which would be perfect for this milkshake recipe.
- Milk – I recommend using whole milk that is just out of the refrigerator. Using extra cold milk is ideal.
- Vanilla extract – adding a bit of vanilla extract will enhance your milkshake flavor. If you can find it, some stores carry cake batter extract, which is a buttery vanilla extract flavor. It takes just like cake!
- Sprinkles – I recommend using “jimmies” which are the longer, slightly softer form of sprinkle. Jimmies are also less likely to bleed, or have their coloring come off quickly in the ice cream.

How do I make a vanilla milkshake with sprinkles?
To make a milkshake, add ice cream, milk and vanilla extract to a blender jar.
Add a tight fitting lid to the blender jar making sure it is secure. Blend on medium speed for 30-40 seconds or until the ice cream is completely blended and smooth.
Stir in the rainbow sprinkles (don’t blend the sprinkles), and pour into a tall glass. Top with whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry. Enjoy right away while cold.

How do I make a thick milkshake?
For a thicker milkshake, only start with a small amount of milk, like 1/4 cup or less. Blend with the ice cream on medium speed just until the milkshake is creamy. Check to see if you’ve achieved your desired consistency. Add more ice cream to make a thicker milkshake.
If you would like the milkshake thinner, add in 1-2 tablespoons more of milk until your desired consistency is achieved.
How do I make my milkshake thinner?
To make a less-thick milkshake, start with adding 1/2 cup of milk with the ice cream. Blend for 30-40 seconds on medium speed. To make thinner, add slightly more milk (2-3 tablespoons more). Blend until your desired consistency is achieved.
What toppings are best on a birthday cake milkshake?
The most customary toppings for a milkshake are whipped cream, sprinkles and maraschino cherries.
Want to make your own whipped cream? Try my homemade Cool Whip recipe, which is a simple way to make stabilized whipped cream. It makes for a fantastic drink topping!
What sprinkles are best to use in a milkshake?
I recommend using “jimmies” which are a longer, slightly softer form of sprinkle. Other sprinkles tend to quickly and easily bleed into the ice cream, which will discolor and turn your milkshake gray.
Where do I find maraschino cherries?
Maraschino cherries can be found at the grocery store near the ice cream toppings. You can also find jars of stemmed or stemless cherries in the canned fruit section of your grocery store.
