Step 1: Prep your ingredients
These black bean brownies are super simple to make and require minimal ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need: 1 can of black beans, rinsed, maple syrup, cocoa powder, coconut oil, eggs, vanilla, salt and chocolate chips.
Ingredient note: for the coconut oil I use Carrington Farms Organic Coconut Oil (liquid and unflavored). For the chocolate chips I use Enjoy Life Mini Chocolate Chips – these contain only 3 ingredients: cane sugar (raw and non-refined), unsweetened chocolate and cocoa butter. If you’re looking for some sugar-free alternatives, I really like these Lakanto Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips and Lily’s No Sugar Added Dark Chocolate Baking Chips.
Step 2: Add ingredients (except chocolate chips) to a blender
The best way to attain a rich, fudgy texture in these brownies is to ensure the batter is smooth and well incorporated. Using a blender or food processor is the best way to puree the beans to a smooth form.

Step 3: Blend until smooth
To make sure the beans and other ingredients are smooth and well incorporated, I blend for 45-60 seconds.
Step 4: Add chocolate chips to batter, reserve some for topping
The last ingredient to add is the chocolate chips. Reserve 2-3 tablespoons of the 1/2 cup total – this will be for topping the brownies. Add the remainder of chocolate chips to the batter and fold in.
Step 5: Pour batter into prepared pan and top with remaining chocolate chips
Pour the batter into an 8×8 pan or baking dish that has been sprayed with non-stick baking spray. I use Spectrum Organic Coconut Oil Non-Stick Spray.
Top the batter with the remaining 2-3 tablespoons of the chocolate chips.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30-34 minutes. I discovered that 32 minutes is the sweet spot for baking time. 35 minutes left the edges of the brownies overly dry and flaky.
Test the brownies for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center. If the toothpick comes out clean and crumb-free, the brownies are done.
Let the black bean brownies cool to room temperature before slicing. They will come out wonderfully moist with a perfect fudgy consistency!

Here’s the recipe for my delicious Healthy Black Bean Brownies:
- 1 (15 oz) can, black beans, drained and well rinsed
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 c. maple syrup
- 1/3 c. coconut oil (I use flavorless)
- 1/4 c. cocoa powder
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/2 c. good quality mini-chocolate chips, divided
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly spray an 8x8" pan with non-stick baking spray (I use coconut oil spray.) Set prepared pan aside.
- To your blender, add the rinsed beans, eggs, maple syrup, coconut oil, cocoa powder, vanilla and salt. Blend well for 45-60 seconds or until ingredients are a very smooth consistency.
- Set aside 2-3 tablespoons of the mini-chocolate chips. Add the remaining chocolate chips to the batter and fold in. Pour batter into prepared pan, and top with the remaining chocolate chips.
- Bake for 30-34 minutes - I discovered that 32 minutes is the sweet spot. Before removing from the oven test brownies for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center. If the toothpick comes out clean and crumb-free, the brownies are done.

Store the brownies covered or in an airtight container and refrigerate. They will keep for 5-7 days refrigerated, or 3-4 days at room temperature.
