What you’ll need to make this pink margarita recipe:
- Grenadine – the red colored non-alcoholic syrup is used in cocktails to give them a pink or red color. It’s traditionally made of pomegranate and sugar. You can find it at most liquor stores or grocery stores where the drink mixes are located.
- Tequila – there are numerous tequila brands on the market today. Choose the best quality liquor that suits your budget.
- Cointreau – Cointreau is an orange citrus liqueur used in many cocktails and margaritas. You can also use Triple sec if Cointreau is unavailable.
- Lime juice – for a single margarita, budget at least 2 limes per drink. If you’re

How do I make a pink margarita?
To make a margarita, start with a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Add the fresh lime juice, tequila and Cointreau. To make the margarita pink, add in a few shakes of the grenadine.

Pro-Tip: Be conservative with the grenadine. Start with a few shakes, and if you want the margarita to be a more vibrant, darker pink or magenta, add in a couple more shakes. A little bit goes a long way.
Add a tight fitting lid to the cocktail shaker, and shake vigorously. Pour into a glass with a salted rim, filled with ice. Enjoy right away while cold.

How do I salt the rim of margarita glasses?
Salting margarita glasses is very simple. Begin by running a lime wedge around the rims of the glasses. This adds the necessary moisture to the rim for the salt to stick to the glass.
Dip the glasses into kosher or margarita salt. Lastly, fill the glasses with crushed or cubed ice. Add some lime slices to the glasses, if you prefer.
I’m using Jose Cuervo Margarita Salt for these margaritas. It comes in a convenient round, flat container that makes it useful for rimming the edges of your margarita glasses. I also use this for my Blue Curacao Margaritas.

Ingredient Substitutions and Recommendations:
- Maraschino cherry juice – don’t have grenadine handy? Feel free to substitute with a small amount of the cherry juice from the jar of maraschino cherries.
- Pink lemonade concentrate – instead of lime juice, use pink lemonade concentrate. This can be found in the freezer section near the other frozen juices.
- Triple sec for Cointreau – both Triple sec and Cointreau are orange citrus liqueurs. Although slightly different in flavor, both liquors tend to be interchangeable. I prefer to use Cointreau.

Frequently asked questions about making margaritas:
There are two different options for serving a margarita. The standard glass for a frozen margarita is a curved, up-style glass like what I used for my Pineapple Margaritas. This is a more traditional glass for a blended drink.
The second option for serving a margarita is a rocks glass. This is a more traditional vessel when enjoying a margarita on the rocks.
Margaritas are a tequila based cocktail. We like and prefer Herradura Reposado Tequila for our margaritas. There are many other brands out there – choose the best quality tequila you can afford.
We prefer Cointreau in a margarita. Cointreau is a orange citrus liqueur, made with sweet and bitter orange citrus rinds. It adds some great richness and mild citrus flavor that pairs perfectly with the lime juice in a margarita.
Triple Sec is also appropriate for a margarita. It is not as strong – Cointreau is approximately 40% stronger than Triple Sec.
The base ingredients for a margarita are Tequila, Cointreau (or Triple Sec), and fresh lime juice. The ratio for these is 2:1:1, 2 parts tequila, 1 part Cointreau, and 1 part lime juice
