Do you love ordering a spicy margarita at your favorite Mexican restaurant? What if I told you these can be easily made at home with just a handful of ingredients?
Forget paying $12+ a drink. These homemade jalapeno margaritas come together in just minutes and can be made at a fraction of the price for what you’re paying at your local watering hole.
In this post I’ll show you exactly what you’ll need to make these margaritas, how to make them, and the tools you’ll need to enjoy margaritas at home.
What do I need to make a jalapeno margarita recipe?
- Tequila – As you may have noticed, there are many tequila brands on the market. We like this Cazadores Tequila (with a deer on the front label.) Feel free to use the best quality tequila that fits your budget.
- Cointreau – Cointreau is an orange-citrus liqueur. It gives margaritas a wonderful depth of flavor. If you cannot find Cointreau, you can substitute with Triple-Sec.
- Fresh lime juice – I recommend juicing limes for a margarita. Fresh juice tastes the best and will give your drink a great quality flavor. If you must use jarred lime juice, choose a good quality product.
- Fresh jalapeno slices – Fresh jalapeno slices are what give this margarita its’ kick. I don’t recommend using canned or pickled jalapenos. Fresh is best. When slicing, be careful to not touch your face or eyes. Promptly wash your hands immediately after handling jalapenos, as they can severely irritate the tissue in and around your eyes.
- Agave Nectar (optional) – agave nectar is completely optional in margaritas. Some people prefer their margarita a little sweeter. If you prefer it more sweet, agave nectar is the best sweetener for a margarita. You can find agave nectar in the baking aisle of the grocery store, near the rest of the sweeteners and sugar.

How do I make a spicy jalapeno margarita?
Start by filling a cocktail shaker with ice. To the shaker, add the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and fresh jalapeno slices. If you are using agave nectar, add it in as well.
Add the tight fitting lid onto the shaker making sure it is secure. Shake vigorously.
Pour the margarita into a prepared glass with ice. Enjoy right away while cold.
Can I use bottled lime juice for a margarita?
I recommend using fresh squeezed lime juice for the best tasting margarita. If limes are scarce, you can use a good quality bottled lime juice in the place of fresh-squeezed.
How much jalapeno should I add to a margarita?
For a single drink, I would recommend 3-4 small slices of fresh jalapeno with the seeds removed. To make your margarita extra spicy, add in a few more.
Can I used jalapeno infused tequila for a spicy margarita?
Using a jalapeno infused tequila is a fantastic option for making a spicy margarita. Brands like Tanteo Jalapeno Tequila are now on the market. Check your local liquor store for these spicy tequilas if you’re looking to enjoy these spicy margaritas on the regular.
Ingredient Substitutions and Recommendations for a jalapeno margarita recipe:
- Tequila – as you’ve likely already seen, there are numerous tequilas on the market. We enjoy either Herradura Reposado (with the horseshoe on the front label) or Cazadores Reposado (with a Deer on the front label). For an extra spicy margarita, look into purchasing Jalapeno liqueur, which will give your margarita extra kick and jalapeno flavor. Choose the best quality tequila that is the most affordable to you.
- Cointreau – If you’re unable to find Cointreau, you can use Triple Sec, which is another citrus liqueur.
- Lime juice – I recommend buying 1-2 limes for each margarita you are making. This will give you adequate juice for each drink and leave extra for salting rims and slices for garnish.

How do I salt a rim of a margarita glass?
To prep the glasses, run a lime wedge around the rims of the glasses. Dip the glasses into kosher or margarita salt. Lastly, fill the glasses with crushed or cubed ice. Add some lime slices to the glasses, if you prefer.
Want to add extra spice to the salt?
If you’re looking to add some extra spice to the salt for your spicy margaritas, consider adding a few shakes of chili powder to the salt. Once you dip the moistened edges of the glass into the salt mixture, it will have both salt and chili powder on the edge.
What glasses are best for margaritas?
If you’re serving a margarita on-the-rocks, a shorter rocks glass is ideal. If you’re serving a blended or frozen margarita, an ups curved margarita glass is best. (Both pictured above.)
