How do I make a dump cake?

Start by melting a stick of butter and pouring it into a bowl with a boxed cake mix (yellow or vanilla). Mix these two ingredients together until crumbly.

Next, to a baking dish add frozen strawberries. Top the berries with the cake mix crumble. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown.

Can I just dump a cake mix on to fruit?

Not necessarily. When doing this you will have areas of your dessert that are powdery and not combined with the fruit or butter. This renders a very undesirable texture to your dump cake.

What cake mix do I use for a dump cake?

For this strawberry dump cake, a yellow or vanilla cake mix can be used. You can use regular or sugar-free boxed cake mixes.

Can I add frozen fruit to a cake mix?

Yes! Using frozen fruit is a great way to make a strawberry cobbler with cake mix. Using frozen berries is a great and economical way to enjoy this dessert with berries are out of season.

Why is it called dump cake?

It is called dump cake because the ingredients are literally “dumped” right into the baking dish. The frozen berries, cake mix and butter are all dumped into the baking dish and baked. No additional preparation is needed.

What does dump cake taste like?

Dump cake tastes most like a fruit cobbler, crumble or crisp. Fruit is baked on the bottom and the cake mix and butter mixture are combined to form a crumble on top of the fruit. Dump cake is traditionally served warm over ice cream, just like a cobbler.

Does dump cake need to be refrigerated?

This strawberry dump cake is best served warm right out of the oven. Store any leftovers in a resealable container and refrigerate, or wrap the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Leftovers will keep for 3-5 days.

What do I serve strawberry cobbler with?

This strawberry cobbler is fantastic served warm over vanilla ice cream. We like vanilla bean ice cream but any vanilla you prefer would be great. I think it would also taste great with a strawberry or lemon ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 2 (16 oz.) pkg, frozen strawberries, or 4 heaping cups
  • 1 (16.25 oz) cake mix, white or yellow
  • 1/2 c. (1 stick) butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a medium baking dish, or 9x9" baking dish or pan add the frozen strawberries to the bottom of the dish. They do not have to be thawed.
  3. To a mixing bowl, add the cake mix. Pour the melted butter over the cake mix and stir together with a fork until crumbly. Mixture will resemble gravel.
  4. Evenly top the strawberries with the cake mix crumble. Bake the strawberry cobbler for 33-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
  6. Serve warm over vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Notes

A sugar free cake mix can be used in this recipe. I tested a sugar-free yellow cake mix, and it baked well. Fresh or frozen strawberries can be used in this recipe. If using frozen berries, they do not have to be thawed.
