What do I need to make Lucky Charms treats?
Here’s a checklist of the ingredients you’ll need to make these soft, chewy marshmallow treats:
- Lucky Charms cereal – feel free to use name-brand or store-brand versions of this marshmallow cereal.
- Mini-marshmallows – I used mini marshmallows, however, if you have larger marshmallows these can be used as well. If you’re using regular sized marshmallows, you’ll need about 44.
- Butter – I keep salted butter on hand, which is what I used for this recipe. You can also use unsalted butter.
- Vanilla extract – this extra ingredient gives the marshmallow treats an amazing flavor.

How do I make Lucky Charms treats?
First, measure out the cereal that you’ll need to a separate bowl and set aside. Once the marshmallows and butter are melted together you’ll need to work quickly.
Melt the mini marshmallow and butter together in a microwave safe bowl. Glass mixing bowls are great for this. For best results, microwave for 1 minute, then stir the marshmallow and butter together. Microwave for another 30-45 seconds until the butter and marshmallow are nearly melted together.
Pro-Tip: Don’t overheat or overcook the marshmallow mixture. Overheating the marshmallows will result in hard cereal treats once they’ve been cooled and cut.
Using a rubber scraper, stir together the melted butter and mini marshmallows. Stir in the vanilla extract. Add in the Lucky charms cereal in the bowl you’ve set aside.
Stir the cereal into the melted marshmallow mixture and incorporate well until everything is completely coated. The mixture will be very sticky.
Tips for working with sticky Lucky Charms rice krispie treats mixture:
- Work quickly – have the cereal ready to go when the marshmallow mixture is being melted. Once the marshmallow mixture begins to cool, it will get harder to remove from the bowl.
- Use a firm rubber scraper or wooden spoon. These are helpful in scraping the sides of the bowl to coat the cereal with the marshmallow mixture.
- Use non-stick cooking spray on your hands – this is a VERY handy tip! Spray a small amount on your hands, and press the mixture into the bottom of your pan. You can also use spray on your spoon or rubber scraper.

Frequently asked questions about making Lucky Charms Krispie Treats:
Overheating the marshmallow mixture when melting the marshmallows is the likely culprit. Instead of melting the mixture in a saucepan on the stove (this quickly becomes too hot), melt the marshmallows and butter in the microwave.
Rice krispie treats can be left at room temperature. Store in a resealable container to prevent the treats from drying out and becoming hard.
If you don’t have mini marshmallows you can use regular sized marshmallows instead. Eight large marshmallows equals 1 cup of mini marshmallows. You’ll need approximately 44 large marshmallows for making krispie treats.
When kept stored in an airtight container, the treats will last for 5-7 days at room temperature.

Lucky Charms Krispie Treats
Equipment
- 9 x 9 Pan This non-stick 9 x 9" pan is fantastic for no bake desserts, as well as bars, brownies and more!
- Glass Mixing Bowls These glass mixing bowls are microwave-safe and perfect for making cereal treats.
- Rubber Scrapers These Cuisinart rubber scraper spatulas are fantastic for fillings, batters, and so much more!
Ingredients
- 5 1/2 cups Lucky Charms cereal or store brand
- 1 (10 oz. bag) mini marshmallows or 44 regular sized marshmallows
- 5 Tablespoons butter salted or unsalted
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Lightly spray a 9 x 9" pan in non-stick spray. Set aside. Measure out the cereal to a bowl and set aside.
- In a large microwave safe bowl, add the marshmallows and butter. Microwave for 1 minute. Stop to stir the mixture using a rubber scraper. Microwave another 30-45 seconds. Marshmallows and butter will be mostly melted. Stir well with the rubber scraper to melt the remaining marshmallows. (I don't recommend heating longer than 2 minutes. This will create hard cereal treats.) Add in the vanilla extract and stir together.
- To the melted marshmallow mixture, add in the cereal. Mix together well to coat the cereal with the marshmallow mixture. Mixture will be very sticky.
- Working quickly, pour out the cereal mixture and press into the bottom of the prepared pan. Spray some non-stick spray onto your hands to help prevent the mixture from sticking to your hands. Press the mixture into the pan. Optionally, top the treats with additional Lucky Charms marshmallows.
- Let treats cool in the pan for 20-30 minutes. Cut into 12 rectangles.
