A Moscow mule is a wonderfully refreshing cocktail made with ginger beer, vodka and lime juice. It can then be flavored with fresh fruits and herbs to give it additional flavor.
In this post I’ll show you how to make a Moscow mule, what ingredients you’ll need to have on hand, and the best tools for making a mule.

What do I need to make a Strawberry Moscow Mule?
- Vodka – we like Tito’s Handmade Vodka, but you can use any traditional vodka and the best quality that you can afford.
- Ginger Beer – ginger beer is a non-alcoholic carbonated soda that is traditionally used to make a Moscow mule. There are many brands out there, including sugar-free options.
- Lime juice – I recommend using fresh-squeezed lime juice for making mules. Fresh-squeezed juice will provide a premium flavor that jarred juice doesn’t provide.
- Strawberry puree – strawberry puree is easily made by blending fresh or frozen strawberries with a small amount of water. Strawberry puree is fantastic for making cocktails and gives your drink a true strawberry flavor.
- Ice – crushed or ice cubes is needed for making Moscow mules.

Strawberry mule variations and fun ingredient twists
You can change up the ingredients to create fun Moscow mule variations. Here are some ideas to try:
- Make a Frozen Strawberry Moscow Mule – instead of pouring all of your ingredients over ice (on-the-rocks), add your ingredients to a blender with ice, and blend. You’ll need about 1 1/2 cups of ice per drink. Blend until smooth, and you’ll have a fun frozen Strawberry Moscow mule.
- Change up the Booze – instead of regular vodka, try a flavored vodka, like vanilla, whipped cream, berry, lemon or a spicy jalapeno. You could also swap Malibu rum for vodka. Try a Strawberry Malibu rum Moscow Mule with a coconut flavored twist. If you like Malibu, try my Skinny Malibu Pina Coladas or my Blueberry Coconut Mojitos.
- Add in Herbs – Try a strawberry basil Moscow mule or strawberry mint Moscow mule. When blending your strawberry puree, add in a few fresh basil or mint leaves. This will really amp up the flavor and freshness.

Muddled vs. puree – which method is better?
In many Moscow mule recipes with fruit we are often directed to muddle fruit in a cocktail shaker. While this is certainly a method you can use, for this specific strawberry recipe, I recommend going with blended strawberry puree. Here’s why; the consistency of the strawberry puree is much better than chunky pieces of strawberry. Also, when blended, the strawberry texture will be much more consistenst and you’ll get more strawberry in every sip. You can also completely eliminate the use of a cocktail shaker.
How do I make strawberry puree for cocktails?
To make strawberry puree, all you need is a blender and fresh or frozen strawberries. Fresh or frozen strawberries are ideal for the best flavor for a mule. I would not recommend using pie filling strawberries. When using fresh strawberries, make sure you rinse and remove stems and any soft spots that might be present.
I wouldn’t recommend using strawberry syrup for a Moscow mule, as it is far too sweet. Any flavoring for a Moscow mule I recommend using fresh fruits, like peaches, pineapple, cherries, blueberries and fresh herbs like basil and rosemary.
