Mango Margaritas – your new favorite mango margarita recipe!

Have you ever been in a restaurant or bar, order a margarita, and then proceed to be served an overly sweet, syrupy drink? This has happened to me more than I care to admit. I got to the point where I stopped ordering margaritas because they were simply too sweet for me. This is when I started making my own Mango Margarita recipe at home.

Restaurant and bar margaritas are often calorie bombs. Often an 8 oz. margarita will set you back nearly 500 calories. A 12 oz. margarita (the ones that come in one of those big, fancy glasses) will top out at 680 calories. The reason these have more calories than an average meal is because they are typically made with simple syrup – the result of that overly sugary taste.

My recipe for this delicious, fresh Mango Margarita is derived directly from my post on How to Make a Skinny Margarita. The key to eliminating a big portion of those restaurant margarita calories is eliminating the simple syrup. I also use very simple, clean ingredients and as a result, have an incredibly fresh tasting margarita.

Here’s how my Mango Margarita recipe comes together:

Step 1: Juice your limes & puree the mango

Much like my skinny margarita recipe, I recommend about 2 limes per drink. So if you know you’re going to be making several margaritas for your Cinco de Mayo party or your Super Bowl watch party, calculate your limes accordingly.

I will often buy a bag or two of limes at Costco if I know I’m going to be making margaritas for a crowd. This is usually the most economical way to go.

Pro-Tip: An essential tool that my husband and I use often is this Stainless Steel Citrus Juicer. It’s very durable and will juice limes with ease.

Making the Mango Puree:

As far as mango is concerned, make sure you select a ripe (but not over-ripe) mango. It should be slightly soft to the touch. Peel the mango, and then add the sweet, yellow flesh to your blender. Puree for a few seconds until you have a smooth puree.

If you’re having a party, you can do this ahead of time, before your guests arrive. Keep the mango puree refrigerated until ready to mix the mango margaritas.

Step 2: Salt the rims of the glasses before mixing the cocktail

If you prefer salt on the rim of your margarita glasses, I recommend salting the rims BEFORE you mix the cocktail. This is because it is very hard to place salt on the rim of your glass after you have poured the drink. I’ve learned this the hard way.

Step 3: For a Mango Margarita ON-THE-ROCKS – Mix the mango margarita in a cocktail shaker

Fill your cocktail shaker with ice. Add the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, agave nectar and mango puree. Shake the cocktail, and pour into your prepared glasses.

Enjoy your mango margarita on the rocks!

Mixing your Frozen, Blended Mango Margarita

The ingredients for this Frozen Mango Margarita is exactly the same. The only exception is that you’ll need 1 cup of ice to make this a frozen margarita.

Start by adding the 1 cup of ice, along with the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, agave nectar and mango margarita to a blender. Blend these ingredients together until the ice is well crushed and smooth. Pour your frozen margarita into a prepared margarita glass. Enjoy right away while cold.

Much like my Mango Mojitos over at Real Housemoms, this mango margarita is incredibly fresh, and completely delicious!

Mango Margarita Q&A:

What is the best tequila for a margarita?

I like Herradura Reposado Tequila. It’s a great, quality tequila that is fantastic in these Mango Margaritas, as well as my Skinny Margaritas and Pineapple Margaritas. Choose the best quality tequila that fits your budget and taste preference.

What glasses are best for margaritas?

The traditional margarita glass is often a curved ups glass. However, rocks glasses are becoming more popular with margarita drinkers. Additionally, frozen margaritas are typically served the in the curved ups glass. A margarita on the rocks is often served in a rocks glass. Feel free to use the glass that you prefer.

How do I salt the rim of a margarita glass?

Start my running a lime wedge around the inner and outer rim of the margarita glass. Next, dip the moistened glass into margarita salt. The salt should stick to the glass. Do this before mixing the cocktail.

What type of salt should I use for the rim of my margarita glass?

Most liquor stores, super markets and even party supply stores carry margarita salt. This Jose Cuervo Margarita Salt is a great option. This is simply just coarsely ground salt, much like kosher salt. Table salt is not preferred, as the small granules of salt have a harder time sticking to the rims of glasses.
