Homemade Starbucks mocha frappuccino recipe, held in hand with straw.

If your morning routine includes stopping by Starbucks for a mocha frappuccino, I’ve got a great way for you to save time, money and maybe even a few calories. My Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino recipe comes together in just minutes and tastes just like you got it from a barista in a green apron.

Made with simple ingredients that you likely already have at home, this simple mocha frappe needs seconds in a blender. Pour into a to-go cup and top with whipped cream for a just-like-Starbucks morning elixir.

Ingredients needed to make classic starbucks mocha frappuccino recipe.

What do I need to make a mocha frappe?

Here’s a quick-reference grocery check list of the ingredients you’ll need to make this easy mocha frappe. You can make this two ways: classic or skinny. Here are the ingredients for both options:

Classic Mocha Frappuccino ingredients:

  • Ice cubes
  • Whole Milk
  • Chocolate syrup (like Hershey’s)
  • Sugar or your preferred sweetener
  • Instant coffee granules or fresh brewed espresso
  • Whipped cream for topping (optional)

Skinny Mocha Frappuccino ingredients:

  • Ice cubes
  • Unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Granular monk fruit sweetener or your preferred sweetener
  • Instant coffee granules or fresh brewed espresso
  • Whipped cream for topping (optional)

For exact ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this post to the recipe card. Thanks!

How do I make a Starbucks mocha frappuccino?

To a blender jar, add the ice, milk, instant coffee, chocolate syrup (or cocoa powder) and sugar (or sweetener). Blend on medium-high speed for 30-45 seconds or until the ice is completely pureed and smooth.

Pour into your favorite glass and top with whipped cream and additional chocolate syrup or chocolate chips, if desired.

Helpful Tool: Blendtec Blender

I use and enjoy this Blendtec Designer Series Blender for all of my smoothies, frappuccinos and protein shakes. It has come to be a very versatile tool in my kitchen, as I make everything from blender muffins and pancakes and even nut butter with this powerful blender.

This is the Blender I use almost DAILY! Everything from smoothies, to cocktails, to waffle and muffin batter and even nut butter, this ultrapowerful blender creates an amazing puree every time. It’s very durable and made to last!

I also use my Blendtec for my Caramel Brulee Latte, Birthday Cake Milkshake and my Chai Tea Latte recipe.

Ingredient Substitutions and Recommendations:

  • Milk: for the classic version, I list whole milk as the primary ingredient. You can substitute the milk of your choice, either dairy or plant-based milk instead of whole.
  • Sugar: for the classic version, I used regular granulated sugar. For the skinny version, I recommend a granular OR liquid sweetener. I use and enjoy Whole Earth granular monk fruit sweetener or Sweet Drops, Vanilla Cream liquid stevia drops. Both are great non-sugar options. Because personal preferences vary greatly, I recommend starting with a small amount of sweetener, and add more to reach your desired sweetness level.
  • Instant Coffee Granules: For both classic and skinny versions, using instant coffee provides a consistent coffee flavor that best matches Starbucks frappuccino recipes. This is because Starbucks uses instant coffee to make their Frappuccino recipes. Starbucks makes a Via Instant Coffee single serving packet that is great. Safeway stores also carry house blend instant coffee single-serving packet (pictured above) that has great flavor. NOTE: do not use coffee grounds, as this is NOT instant coffee. As a substitute to the instant coffee, you could also add a shot of freshly brewed espresso.

Nespresso Vertuo Coffee and Espresso Machine

Want to make both coffee AND espresso at home? This is the machine I use and LOVE. The fresh espresso is amazing and the brewed coffee tastes equally fantastic. I highly recommend!

I use this Nespresso machine to make freshly brewed espresso at home. It’s fantastic for a quick and simple Iced Vanilla Latte, Iced Caramel Latte, Mocha Smoothie or a Baileys Espresso Martini.

Topping your Mocha Frappe:

Whipped cream is the most common topping for a mocha frappucino recipe. However, chocolate chips are a great addition or a drizzle of additional chocolate syrup.

If you’re making the skinny option, go light on the whipped cream, as it will quickly add calories, sugar and fat to your drink.

Mmmm! I love coffee but you are right about it getting so hot during the summer. Iced coffee (with extra chocolate) sounds wonderful.
