These M&M Christmas cookies are the perfect cookie recipe for the holidays. Loaded with white and semi sweet chocolate chips, along with red and green Christmas M&M’s, these cookies will be perfect for your holiday celebrations.

In this post I’ll show you what you need to make M&M cookies, the best tools for making cookies and how to store them for the holidays.

Ingredients needed to make M&M Christmas cookies.

What do I need to make M&M Christmas cookies?

  • Butter – using room temperature butter is ideal for making cookies. I use salted butter for optimal flavor, however, you can also use unsalted.
  • Light Brown Sugar – brown sugar is traditional in most cookie recipes. It gives the cookies their crisp edges after being baked.
  • White, granulated sugar – a combination of the brown and granulated sugar helps sweeten the cookies and give them an ideal texture of being crisp on the outside and soft in the middle.
  • Eggs – for this recipe I recommend using an egg plus one egg yolk. This will lend to the perfect chewy consistency.
  • Vanilla extract – adding vanilla to your cookie dough will give it an ideal flavor.
  • All purpose flour – traditional in most cookie recipes, flour is needed for the body of the cookie.
  • Baking soda – the necessary leavening for the cookie, it will help the cookies rise slightly when baked.
  • Salt – ideal for flavor, salt is necessary in helping balance the sweetness of the cookies.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips – semi sweet chocolate chips are the ideal flavor, however feel free to use milk chocolate or dark chocolate if these better suit your tastes.
  • White chocolate chips – these provide a great contrast to the cookies and add to the flavor of every bite.
  • Red and Green Christmas M&M’s candies – mostly found during November and December, Christmas M&M’s add the pretty red and green color to these Christmas cookies. You can substitute regular or any other seasonal M&M candies in this recipe.

How do I make Christmas chocolate chip cookies?

Start by mixing the cookie dough together by combining the wet and dry ingredients in separate bowls. For the dry ingredients, combine the flour, salt and baking soda. Whisk together to combine.

In a separate bowl, combine the room temperature butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar. Cream together using a hand mixer or manually with a wooden spoon. Add in the eggs and vanilla and combine to the dough.

Gradually add the dry ingredients, a few spoonful’s at a time, to the wet ingredients making sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl. The dough will be thick.

Add in the white and semi sweet chocolate chips along with the M&M’s. Using a rubber scraper, mix together with the cookie dough. Refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes.

Should I refrigerate cookie dough before baking cookies?

It is not completely necessary, however refrigerating cookie dough before forming cookies is very helpful with the cookies baking evenly and retaining their round shape.

How to form M&M cookies

The best way to form chocolate chip cookies is by using a cookie scoop. Using a cookie scoop helps form even, uniform cookies that maintain their shape when baked.

Ingredient Substitutions and Recommendations:

  • Christmas sprinkles – for additional color, try adding 1/4 cup of Christmas sprinkles to the cookie dough. It’s a great way to add a little extra color and Christmas cheer to every cookie.
  • Chopped nuts – adding it nuts like chopped walnuts or pecans is a great way to add a little crunch to every cookie.
  • Peppermint or almond extract – instead of using a traditional vanilla extract, try peppermint or almond extract to change the flavor profile.

For exact ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions be sure to scroll down to the recipe at the bottom of the post. Thanks!

What are the best tools for making M&M Christmas cookies?

Here are the tools I use and love that are ideal for making cookies:

  • Mixing Bowls – I use these glass mixing bowls from Amazon. They are great for mixing wet and dry ingredients and are both dishwasher and microwave safe.
  • Rubber Scrapers – fantastic for baking, these rubber scrapers are perfect for mixing cookie dough.
  • Sheet Pans – I use and absolutely love these USA Stainless Steel Sheet Pans. Not only are they great for baking, I use them often for making one-pan meals.
  • Silicone baking mats – I never make cookies without these silicone baking mats! Absolutely perfect for achieving and evenly baked cookie, and guarantees the cookies don’t stick to your pan.
  • Cooling racks – cooling racks are great for your cookies to cool to room temperature. Allowing cookies to properly cool from all sides will help them maintain their shape and achieve the perfect texture.

Frequently asked questions about making Christmas M&M Cookies:

Where do I get Christmas M&M’s?

You can find Christmas M&M’s at most discount stores and grocery stores. They are typically found with the seasonal items. Most often, you can only find Christmas M&M’s during November and December.

What can I use instead of Christmas M&M’s?

If you cannot find red and green M&M’s, feel free to use regular or mini M&M’s. You can also use any other seasonal M&M’s including Valentine’s Day, Easter/Spring, St. Patricks Day, July 4th and Halloween M&M’s.

What is the best way to store M&M cookies?

The best way to store cookies is at room temperature in a resealable, airtight container. If cookies are left out in the open they will dry out and become hard. Storing in an airtight container will help them maintain their soft, chewy texture.

What do I do if my chocolate chip cookies become hard?

To soften cookies after they become hard is by storing them in an airtight container with 1-2 slices of sandwich bread. The cookies will absorb the moisture from the bread and become soft again.

How do I prevent my chocolate chip cookies from becoming hard after baking?

For soft cookies, make sure you adequately measure your brown sugar. Overpacking or adding too much brown sugar to cookies will create a hard cookie once they have cooled after baking.
