What do I need to make apple pie filled cinnamon rolls?
- Refrigerated cinnamon rolls (in the tube) – I chose the larger Grands rolls, which come 5 rolls to a tube. You can find these rolls in the refrigerator section in your grocery store.
- Apple pie filling – this recipe is perfect with the soft apples. These are ideal for baking inside the cinnamon roll layers and are flavored perfectly.
- Whipped Cream Cheese – I chose whipped cream cheese, as this is much easier to whip together with the frosting that comes with the cinnamon rolls.

How do I make cinnamon rolls and apple pie filling?
Begin by chopping the apple slices into chunks. I discovered the best and easiest way to add the apples to the center of the cinnamon rolls is by cutting the apples into smaller chunks.
Additionally, you don’t need to unroll the cinnamon rolls. Simple push the small apple chunks into the layers of cinnamon roll. You can easily add 6-8 chunks of apples to the inside layers of the rolls.
What is the best pan to bake cinnamon rolls?
I discovered the best pan for baking cinnamon rolls is a simple sheet pan. I use and love these Stainless Steel USA Sheet Pans from Amazon. They are very durable, clean easily and are also great for sheet pan dinners.
How long do I bake apple pie filled cinnamon rolls?
Cinnamon rolls stuffed with apple pie filling will need longer to bake than the cinnamon roll packaging indicates. Bake the stuffed cinnamon rolls for 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees. The outer edges of the cinnamon rolls should be browned.

Ingredient Substitutions and Recommendations:
- Pecans – chopped pecans are a great option for cinnamon rolls and go well with apples.
- Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting – if you’re looking for a thicker cream cheese frosting, be sure to check out our recipe for how to make cream cheese frosting. This is great on cakes, rolls, cupcakes and more!
- Extra Cinnamon – looking for extra cinnamon flavor? Sprinkle the tops of each frosted cinnamon roll with extra cinnamon. You can also add about 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to the frosting when mixing.
Frosting for apple pie filled cinnamon rolls
The easiest way to make frosting for these short-cut cinnamon rolls is to add a container of cream cheese to the pre-packaged frosting that comes with the rolls. Not only does this give the frosting more body, it also adds some thickness and flavor.
Try adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to the frosting for extra cinnamon flavor.

Frequently asked questions about cinnamon rolls:
Because these rolls are topped with cream cheese frosting, I recommend storing the rolls in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The rolls will keep for up to 7 days refrigerated.
Yes, this stuffed cinnamon roll recipe can also use other types of pie filling like cherries or blueberries.
Yes, frozen fruit can be used instead of pie filling. Fruit like cherries, blueberries, peaches and raspberries would be ideal. Thicker pieces of fruit, like peaches will need slightly longer to bake through. For best results, thaw the fruit before baking.
Yes, fresh apples can be used. I have not tested this cinnamon roll recipe with fresh apples. However, because fresh apples have not been cooked, they will need additional time in the oven. I would recommend adding some extra cinnamon to the apples when adding them to the rolls.

Apple Pie Filled Cinnamon Rolls
Equipment
- Sheet Pan These USA stainless steel sheet pans are great for one-pan meals!
- Kitchenaid Artisan Mini Plus 3.5-Qt. Tilt-Head Stand Mixer with Flex Edge Beater Fantastic for mixing frosting for the cinnamon rolls!
Ingredients
- 2 17.5 oz. pkg. Grands Cinnamon Rolls large rolls, 5 to a package
- 1 21 oz. can apple pie filling
- 1 8 oz. pkg. whipped cream cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly spray a sheet pan with non stick baking spray or line with parchment paper. Set prepared pan aside.
- On a cutting board, slice the apples into chunks. This makes it much easier to stuff the rolls with the apple pieces. Transfer apple chunks to a bowl.
- Remove the cinnamon rolls from the packaging, place each roll evenly onto the sheet pan. Stuff each cinnamon roll with the apple chunks. Each roll will easily accomodate at least 6-8 apple pieces. Evenly disperse the chunks throughout the layers of each roll.
- Bake the stuffed cinnamon rolls at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. NOTE: this is longer than the cinnamon roll packaging indicates. The longer bake time is needed due to the apples.
For frosting:
- While rolls bake, mix together the frosting. To a mixing bowl, add the frosting that came with the cinnamon rolls. Add in the package of whipped cream cheese. Using a whisk attachment, mix together the frosting until smooth.
- Once rolls come out of the oven, let cool for 5-10 minutes before frosting. Enjoy right away while warm.
