What do I need to make air fryer sweet potatoes?
- Sweet Potatoes (also labeled as Yams) – sweet potatoes/yams are found in the produce section of your local grocery store near the rest of the potatoes and onions.
- Avocado oil – a fantastic healthy oil, avocado oil is a much better option than any vegetable, canola or seed oil. If you don’t have access to avocado oil, olive oil is a good option.
- Garlic salt – a great way to add a savory flavor to the potatoes.
- Ground pepper – a nice addition for any roasted sweet potato, pepper provides good seasoning.
- Smoked paprika – a wonderfully flavorful way to add a bit of smokey flavor. You can also use regular paprika.

How do I make sweet potatoes in air fryer?
To make sweet potatoes in the air fryer, you’ll first need to prep the potatoes. Because the skin can be rather tough and dry after cooking, I recommend peeling the potatoes before cutting and seasoning.
Use a vegetable or potato peeler to remove the dry outer layer of skin from the sweet potatoes.
Once peeled, slice the potatoes in long wedges, about 1/2″ in thickness using a santoku or Chef’s knife.
How do I season sweet potato wedges?
The best and easiest way to season sweet potato wedges is adding the seasoning before the wedges are cooked.
Add the cut sweet potatoes to a mixing bowl or shallow sheet pan, then drizzle with avocado oil, garlic salt, pepper and paprika. Toss together with a rubber scraper so all sides of the sweet potato wedges are coated with the oil and spices.

Frequently asked questions about air fryer sweet potatoes:
Depending on how thick you cut your sweet potato wedges, the sweet potatoes will need to cook for 13-15 minutes.
For homemade sweet potato wedges, they need to cook at 400 degrees. The high temp will help cook the potatoes and lightly brown the potatoes on the outside.
It is recommended by most air fryer manufacturers that you preheat the air fryer before cooking. This helps bring the air fryer basket up to temperature, and will give you a more accurate cook time. I use a Ninja Max Air Fryer, which needs approximately 3 minutes to preheat.
